Courier Fraud Door Security Lewes | Simple Fixes That Keep Scammers Out

Lewes Police warned about courier fraud on 19 June 2026. A door chain and spy hole cost less than £30 and stop most attempts cold. Here's what to do.

Lewes and Seahaven Police sent out a Sussex Alerts bulletin on 19 June 2026 warning residents about courier fraud. The scam goes like this: someone knocks on your door, claims to be a police officer or a bank courier, and either asks you to hand over cash or tries to get inside. It's been hitting towns across East Sussex for a while, and now it's on the radar locally.

I'm not going to sensationalise it. But I do want to say something plainly: the conversation around home security in 2026 is almost entirely about smart locks, video doorbells, and app-controlled alarms. That stuff has its place. What it doesn't do, though, is stop you from opening your front door to a convincing stranger on a Tuesday afternoon. That's a different problem, and it has a much simpler solution.

What the Scam Actually Looks Like at Your Door

Courier fraud works because it exploits politeness and authority. The person knocking looks presentable. They might have a lanyard, a clipboard, or a high-vis jacket. They'll say something like: "We've frozen a fraudulent account, we need your bank card now while we investigate," or "There's been a disturbance nearby and we need to check you're safe."

Real police officers and genuine couriers don't ask for your bank card. They don't ask to come inside unannounced. Sussex Police will always give you a verifiable number to call back on before expecting any cooperation. That's the tell.

But here's the thing. None of that knowledge helps you if you've already swung the door wide open.

The £15 Fix That Actually Matters

A door chain, properly fitted into solid timber or a reinforced frame, means you can speak to whoever is at your door without opening it fully. They cannot push past you. They cannot reach in. The conversation happens at a controlled distance, and if something feels wrong, you close the door.

That's it. That's the defence.

A decent chain, something like the ERA 828 or a solid-brass option from Yale, costs between £12 and £25 from a trade supplier. Fitting takes 20 minutes if the frame is sound. The screws need to bite into the frame itself, not just the door lining. Get that wrong and one firm shove defeats the whole thing. That's the only part where I'd say spend a few pounds on having someone fit it properly.

While you're at it, a door viewer (a wide-angle spy hole, ideally 200 degrees) lets you see who's outside before you touch the handle. Cost: around £8 to £15. Combined with a chain, you've got a system that lets you assess anyone at your door without exposure.

These two things cost less than a takeaway for two and are available today.

Who's Most at Risk in Lewes

Courier fraud disproportionately targets older residents, and in Lewes that means areas like Wallands, Nevill, and parts of Southover where a lot of long-term homeowners live. It also turns up in Ringmer, Seaford, and Newhaven, where the same Sussex Alerts coverage applies.

If you're a landlord with elderly tenants in BN7 or BN8, this is worth a conversation with them. Fitting a chain and spy hole on their door is a small job. It's also something a tenant might not think to ask for.

Small businesses on the Cliffe High Street or the industrial estates near Malling aren't immune either. Fraudsters have posed as couriers to access commercial premises. A door buzzer system is ideal for those premises, but even a simple "we don't accept unexpected callers without an appointment" policy, backed by a locked door, helps.

My Actual Opinion

Smart technology gets the column inches. Video doorbells generate Amazon reviews. But a Yale door chain, screwed into a proper frame, is the physical last word in preventing someone from crossing your threshold against your wishes. It doesn't need Wi-Fi. It doesn't need charging. It works when you're tired and someone catches you off guard at 7pm.

The police bulletin is a good prompt. Don't just read it and move on. Spend half an hour this weekend checking whether your front door has a chain fitted. If it doesn't, or if the one there wobbles when you pull it, get it sorted.

Questions people actually ask

A correctly fitted chain will stop a casual push and buy you time to close the door. It won't hold against a determined, sustained forced entry, that requires a multipoint locking door and reinforced frame. But courier fraud isn't a forced-entry crime. It relies on you voluntarily opening the door fully. A chain removes that option and that's usually enough to end the attempt.
